Description Attribute of Tag

Post by ahmadkhalid »

UAGatewayDescriptionError.PNG
I am unable to get the description of a tag when I use the Gateway.
The error can be seen in the attached image.
On the other hand, if I use some other wrapper(matrikon etc), I am able to view the description.
Is there a bug with the Gateway?

Hello Khalid,

the description is an optional field in OPC UA, a server can provide it but is does not have to. The fact that it is displayed in "gray" in the Attribute Window of the UaExpert indicates that there was no decription delivered for that node.

The UaGateway can principally map descriptions from underlying UA Servers through the aggregating UaGateway and show them on the other side. But again not every node must have a description.

What is the underlying Server you have connected? Is that a DA Server or a UA Server?

The underlying server is a DA server.
In fact when I used Matrikon UA Wrapper, I can view the description.

Hello Khalid,

when aggregating UA Servers with the UaGateway the description attribute is automatically mapped.

when wrapping DA Servers with the UaGateway we only map the first 6 standard properties (like value, quality, timestamp, access rights, etc.). However, the "ItemDescription" in the classic OPC DA (PropID = 101) is currently not mapped to the corresponding UA attribute "Description".
