Future of OPC Foundation .NET SDK

Post by gisTRON »

Hi,

I was wondering about the future of the OPC Foundation NET SDK. http://www.opcfoundation.org/Downloads. ... KEY&CI=285

And today i saw a new release of the NET Client/Server SDK V2.1.0 - Release FROM Unified Automation.

1) Will there be any new updates on the OPC Foundation SDK?
2) Do OPC Foundation members, who had access to the OPC Foundation SKD, get also access to the Unified Automation SDK for free? Since it is promoted as the commercial version.

greetings

Hi,

As you can see on the OPC Foundation download, the last version of the SDK is from 12/2011 and it is a beta version.

The OPC Foundation realized that they have not enough resources to maintain a complete SDK in product quality. The result was the creation of the Software Management Working Group responsible for reorganizing the OPC Foundation deliverables. The new structure of deliverables as result of this working group will be published in Q1 2013.

New structure for OPC UA will be

(a) Maintained components
- ANSI C stack
- .NET stack
- JAVA stack
- LDS (new ANSI C based Local Discovery Server)

(b) Sample applications as binary setup

(c) OPC UA sample code
- No longer advertised as SDK
- Maintained as sample code to show implementation of OPC UA features but not as generic SDK on product level
- Sample code used by the OPC UA working group to verify new features
- Updated on a low frequency

Based on this restructuring of the OPC Foundation deliverables, Unified Automation decided to develop a commercial .NET SDK. This Unified Automation .NET SDK is based on the .NET SDK version 1.1 from the OPC Foundation with major enhancements and simplifications. The APIs of the application level assemblies UaClient and UaServer were completely updated to match APIs of other Unified Automation SDKs and to benefit from the experience of the other Unified Automation SDKs. It is also integrated with rapid application development tools like UaModeler that is able to create code for all Unified Automation SDKs.

This commercial Unified Automation .NET SDK is maintained on product level and is not free of charge.

Best Regards,
